We help to connect people

Community Transport can provide transport solutions to anybody within the Dacorum community, including elderly, disabled or vulnerable individuals and voluntary, sports, faith and youth groups, Schools and Charities.

We also support the wellbeing of vulnerable individuals by taking them shopping through our Door to Store service or on outings through our Day Trippers club. 

Minibus trips to the shops or on day’s out are more than just travel, they are a way for lonely people to meet friends and gives them something to look forward to every week.

Our transport services

COMMUNITY CARS – A volunteer delivered “community car” service for those less mobile, or with no access to conventional public transport.

DAY TRIPPERS – An outings club visiting National Trust properties, stately homes, places of interest and venues for lunch or afternoon tea.

COMMUNITY WHEELS – Local and some rural scheduled bus services, including Door to Store and Cemetary Run.

MINIBUS HIRE – We offer low-cost minibus rental, either with a volunteer or for self-drive hire to not-for-profit groups and public organisations including Sports Groups, Schools, community, elderly, disability, faith & youth groups.

WAV HIRE (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) – Specifically designed to provide greater independence and social opportunities for individuals who use wheelchairs. This vehicle is a crucial part of our mission to connect and support vulnerable individuals within the Dacorum community. Available for private hire.

Community Cars

Community Cars* is our social car scheme that provides vital transportation for people who struggle to access public transport or don’t have their own vehicle.

Our dedicated team of volunteer drivers use their own cars to provide door-to-door transport to essential appointments including medical consultations, hospital visits, social engagements to help maintain independence, dignity and ensures that mobility challenges don’t prevent people from accessing the healthcare and support services they need. All our volunteer drivers are DBS checked and trained to provide compassionate, professional assistance.

Booking costs – £5 pounds for a return journey of up to five miles. A further 65 pence per mile beyond this.

*please note – we require four working days notice to secure the booking and assign a volunteer driver.

Be a Volunteer Driver.

At Community Action Dacorum we have many opportunities for individuals to volunteer and help make a difference to people’s lives and improve their own health and wellbeing. By being a volunteer driver for our Community Car Scheme you will be making a difference to people’s lives by providing transport for the less able taking them to health and social appointments.

To become a volunteer driver you need to:

Live in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring or one of the surrounding villages in Dacorum
Own your own car
Can spare a few hours during the day
Enjoy driving and meeting people
Hold a full UK driving licence for a minimum of 2 years
Be physically fit to be able to lift walking aids
Have a DBS check

Benefits of volunteering as a Community Car driver:

It is very rewarding. Our volunteers report that they enjoy meeting the clients who are all very appreciative of the service
It is flexible. You don’t have to commit to a set day or time you can choose what day of the week, how long and how frequently. We don’t mind you saying no to a job, because we value the times that you do say yes!
You receive reimbursement for your mileage expenses at £0.45 per mile
No extra insurance is required

Door to Store

This is a community bus service for residents in Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley, Bovingdon, Berkhamsted & Tring. Supported by volunteers, the service picks you up from your home address and takes you to a local supermarket.

The service operates every fortnight and costs £7 for the return journey.

Minibus Hire

We offer low-cost minibus rental, either with a volunteer or for self-drive hire to not-for-profit groups and public organisations including Sports Groups, Schools, community, elderly, disability, faith & youth groups.

We have a total of 9 minibuses ranging from 14 – 17 seats. They can be hired for as little as an hour and for whole trips in the UK and EU. The cost of hire includes fuel and breakdown cover. Membership cost is £42 for the year.

Self-Drive (you provide the driver)

Members £65 + VAT (up to 30 miles)

Non-members £85 + VAT (up to 30 miles)

Volunteer Driver (we provide the driver)

Members £65 + driver expenses (up to 30 miles)
Non-members £85 + driver expenses (up to 30 miles)

Paid Driver (if available)

Members £65 + £15 per hour for the driver (up to 30 miles)
Non-members £85 + £15 per hour for the driver (up to 30 miles)

More than one day hire admin charge £20

Mileage Charges for Distances Over 30 Miles

Members: £1.50 per mile
Non-members: £2.45 per mile

If you use your own driver then your driver will need to be registered with us and hold a minibus permit either MiDAS or equivalent.  We can arrange this for your driver.
