Delivering Key Services

Community Action Dacorum delivers services in the key arenas of Communities | Employability | Wellbeing to develop our services and increasingly offer more support to Dacorum residents. Our events volunteers’ team are a new group, emerging from our vaccine volunteers. They can support community events and one-off pop-up experiences supporting the charity and the community. Our HITS team have been working with the local Job Centre to provide courses for bilingual individuals to support them to set up in business as translators. As a result, we have directly employed 4 new interpreters and a further 7 individuals are using their newly developed skills elsewhere. Our wellbeing team have increased our offering with a wheelchair accessible vehicle, which offers the potential for a holistic transfer from home to ShopMobility and back again.

Key Highlights for Community Action Dacorum

Our communities work brings together charities and community organisations across the borough to deliver common projects. By creating opportunities for experts to work together, the outcome for Dacorum is multiplied. One example of this is the work we have been leading with Dacorum Borough Council and our charity partners to support people with the cost of living. By bringing those organisations who can have the most impact together to run pop-up surgeries at several community halls across the borough, we were able to make life easier for a wide range of local people.

Our employability team work across a wide range of areas to improve the life chances of local residents. One example of this was an autistic young man who was non-communicative when he started as a producer for Radio Dacorum. After six-months of learning the role, he became a presenter and built his confidence broadcasting. A radio studio provides a controlled environment for neurodiverse people that gives them control of their surroundings whilst not knowing just how many people are listening in. After 9 months in the studio, he got a job serving customers in a high-street shop. None of this would be possible without this intervention.

Our wellbeing team deliver ShopMobility in the Marlowes shopping centre. This allows people with mobility issues to have dignified independence and remain self-reliant for longer. The daughter of one of our users fed back how thankful she was for the service as it had “given her a chance to be a daughter again, rather than her mother’s carer.” Our wellbeing services improve the quality of life for people in Dacorum.
